Ice Cream

If I scream and you scream, you might get chocolate ice cream

Antony Jenkins

Readers may recall our recent piece on Singapore Airlines and strawberry ice cream. This was about a woman on a Singapore Airlines flight who when offered strawberry ice cream asked if she could have either chocolate or vanilla, since she wasn't keen on the strawberry option.

How to boost your willpower

How to boost your willpower

Ice cream doesn't stand a chance against me - I have been known to polish off entire two-litre tubs in one sitting. In my resolve to eat less of the sweet treat, I find the battle is usually won or lost long before I dip my spoon in the tub. It takes place in the supermarket, when I decide whether to put the tub in my trolley.

Although I haven't drunk a glass of milk since I was forced to by my mother as an adolescent (despite her insistence to the contrary, it didn't make me grow up to be big and strong), I actually consume a fair amount of it. While I do drink milk in coffee, most of my intake comes from savoury dishes and desserts, especially ice cream.

Can you change your ways?

Giving up a habit isn't easy, but it can be a good thing for our mind, body and soul. The Young Post team challenged themselves to give up one thing throughout July.

Whether it's for a health reason, to train our mind, or for fun, we've all got an experience to share.

Before and afters

The warmer weather has brought durians to fruit vendors, supermarket aisles and dessert shops across town. The spiky fruit is served in many ways, including with shaved ice, in a pudding (similar to panna cotta) and in cr?pes filled with whipped cream. But for those yet to acquire a taste for the pungent fruit, there are many other sweet things on offer.

Mouth-watering treats take centre stage at chocolate line launch

Actress Jennifer Tse Ting-ting had been wanting to make a chocolate cake for boyfriend, actor Andy On Chi-kit, for a while, so when Godiva chocolatier invited her to be the special guest of honour at a banquet dinner that involved making, and tasting, chocolate she jumped at the chance.

Yip Oi-wun

Yip Oi-wun has a sweet tooth. Her favourite food discoveries are always dessert related. She says although the fireworks display added colour to her recent meal at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at The Peak on National Day, it was the chocolate chip cookie sundae drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce that made the meal.

Of all the kitchen gifts I've received, the one I use most is my ice cream maker. The Gaggia gelatiera, bought in Italy by my husband, has a built-in freezer unit so it churns and freezes at the same time.

Cool ideas to scoop up

1. When it comes to unusual ice creams, I immediately think of sakura (cherry blossom). It's a light and fresh flowery taste that you'll fall in love with from the very first bite. There are few floral ice cream flavours, so this one is truly special.

summer colours

A well-mixed palette of colours produces vitality, and this is what our budding artists have in common in their entries to our summer theme, colours, this week. Charlotte Chan envisages the ideal ice cream to beat the heat, and Lucy Lam takes her inspiration from a stroll in Hongkongers' favourite entertainment park - Ocean Park.

Ruby Tuesday

Ruby Tuesday Shop 1002, 10/F World Trade Centre, Causeway Bay Tel: 2895 1628

Grub: American-style burgers, ribs, pasta and wicked desserts.

Vibe: This is quite a large family restaurant. The staff are friendly and helpful. Modern pop music plays in the background; in the afternoon the volume is turned up a bit, making it a funky hangout.

Be kind to thy 'neighbour'

I hope you treat your classmates well. Some students make fun of their 'neighbours' - those sitting next to them - which can cause ill-feeling in class. For example, they laugh at their classmates in front of others, play humiliating tricks on them and even 'steal' their stationery.

What's the best way to enjoy a chocolate sundae?

Balwinder Singh, 15, Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo)

I think it's best to eat a chocolate sundae in the summer with your family at the beach. It is a delicious cold dessert, and ideal for the hot weather. Adding chocolate sauce to your sundae will make it taste even better. You may also think of the happy moments in your life while eating your ice-cream.

Desserts take the cake

A restaurant, Serendipity 3, has launched two desserts in conjunction with jewellery store Euphoria New York.

The HK$7,800 Grand Opulence has to be ordered at least 48 hours in advance.

The sundae, served in a tall crystal cup, consists of three scoops of vanilla ice cream covered in 23-carat edible gold leaf.

Red alert

Raspberries are frequently used - some might say overused - by pastry chefs because the fruit makes a simple, attractive garnish for desserts, adding colour to a plate that might otherwise consist only of shades of brown.
