Flyers fire head coach Laviolette

The winless Philadelphia Flyers sacked head coach Peter Laviolette just three games into the regular season, the National Hockey League club announced Monday.

Assistant coach Craig Berube will replace Laviolette as the coach of the Flyers who dropped to 0-3 with Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Flyers have scored just once in each of their three losses.

Miikka Kiprusoff retires from NHL

Miikka Kiprusoff is leaving the NHL and the Calgary Flames on his terms.

The veteran goalie announced his retirement on Monday after 12 NHL seasons, the last nine with the Flames - the club with which he wanted to finish his career.

Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby was careful not to get too far ahead of himself after helping the Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 7-3 to take a 3-1 lead in the NHL Eastern Conference semi-final series.

"I'm not talking about anything ahead of game five," the Pittsburgh captain said when asked about a potential Eastern Conference final against the Boston Bruins.
