Spoof wedding survey gave Leon cover to surprise Shirley with proposal

Medic Shirley Ho and physics teacher Leon Leung first met through the ICQ instant-messaging service when Shirley was 14 and Leon was 16. They later discovered they also had offline connections - they attended the same middle school and the same church.

The '90s are calling on updated ICQ

In a city where old buildings are torn down and fashion trends turn around in a matter of weeks, Hongkongers are wallowing in nostalgia in an unlikely way: reliving online romances on ICQ.

Under-age sex admitted

A 23-year-old man yesterday admitted having sex with two girls, aged 12 and 13, on four occasions, and later trying to force one into giving a false statement to police. Ng Chi-yuen pleaded guilty in the District Court to two counts each of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 and under 16, and one count of an act intended to pervert the course of justice.

Time management is the key to success

In our society, some people are very successful while others achieve little. How can we have two such different types of people? In fact, they are equal.

Reclamation comes with a price

Less than 20 per cent of Hong Kong's land is suitable for development as it is so mountainous.

Urban development is concentrated on the coastline.

So reclaiming land from the sea in the harbour is the government's land supply method.

By 2002, 67 square kilometres of land had been reclaimed.

Skype's the limit

I could be accused of courting disaster. I don't bother about upgrading my antiviral software. Worse, sometimes just for kicks, I click on a received .exe file - don't try that unless you love solving problems.

In my latest reckless manoeuvre, I've opened my computer to all-comers via 'Skype Me'.

Respect each other

In my school, people come from all over the world. From the US, Spain, France, Nigeria, Thailand, Japan and Hong Kong, to name a few.

Most people bring their cultures and traditions to school. They may be different from what you know.

They may look very different from you.

They might do things that you would never do.

Take the time to interact with your friends

Something unfortunate happened recently. I was chatting on the internet and told someone a secret about one of my friends. Soon, my friend found out and asked me if I had done this shameful thing. When I admitted that I had, he got really angry. I felt bad about what I had done as I had promised not to tell anyone this secret.

Please forgive me, I am terribly sorry.

Treasure your friends - and meet up with them

I am writing in response to a letter about friendship, which appeared in the Young Post recently. In the letter, the student says we should take good care of our friends. Like him, I usually forget my friends' birthdays and only remembers when we're chatting on ICQ. Sometimes I do things that hurt them.

Immerse yourself in a wealth of information

In my school, I like our library the most because it is very big. It has more than 1,000 books covering various topics.

Our library always has new books, but my classmates are quick to borrow them, which makes me disappointed if I can't get the books I want.

I like reading stories and science and history books most because they are interesting.

Computers have negative impacts

Checking e-mail has become an integral part of our daily routine. When asking friends what they would take with them to a deserted island, most of them chose their laptops. But are computers tools that improve us or degrade us?

Chatroom blues

You switch on your computer, and a small ICQ box pops up, making its familiar 'oh-oh!' when someone messages you.

A means of convenient communication, ICQ has become a necessity for most young computer users. But a study has revealed that using ICQ to chat and playing of online games may be associated with depression among adolescents.
