Snow place like home

Snow is falling steadily onto the Coastal Mountains above Vancouver, and it's hard to believe that a building erected from that very material can possibly be transformed into a warm and comfortable bolt-hole for the night.

Space exploration

You can never be too rich, too thin or have enough wardrobe space. OK, I made that last bit up but, unless your closet is of Carrie Bradshaw proportions, you would probably agree. It's not fun scrambling to locate that missing shoe or matching clutch when you're meant to be somewhere else.

Notes from the dorm

Snow is a rarity in Hong Kong, usually made of fluffed-up cotton to be used as store-front decorations during the festive season. In countries closer to the Arctic Circle, snow is both loved and hated.

How do you build igloos? Provided the temperature is well below freezing, building snow shelters is relatively easy. Sheltering from wind is the first priority because wind can drastically decrease the temperature of the air. It is necessary to construct shelters that retain heat well.

An igloo will take a few hours to build but is simpler than you think.

Designer times it right with souvenir

One of the high points in the designing career of Dennis Chan (above) was when he was chosen to create the official government souvenir for the handover ceremony - an elegant watch with simple lines and a shiny dial to reflect the SAR's bright future.

Made from chrome and with a black leather strap, the watch has become a collector's item.
