Mexico appeared to strike a major blow against one faction of the hyper-violent Zetas cartel on Wednesday night, with the navy announcing it had captured one of the country’s most-wanted drug traffickers, Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known as “El Taliban”.

Drug mules bear the brunt of rising cocaine arrests

Cocaine smuggling from South America is on the rise.

Drug cartels are using couriers, or 'mules', trained to carry up to 1.7kg of the drug in their stomachs for flights lasting 20 hours or longer.

In April and May alone, airport customs officers seized 20kg of cocaine with a street value of HK$22 million and arrested 14 suspected mules.

Fewer teens taking drugs, study finds

Government figures show a decline of youth drug abuse in Hong Kong ahead of this Sunday's international anti-drug abuse day.

The Action Committee Against Narcotics announced last week that the number of reported young drug abusers dropped by 39.9 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period last year. The number went down from 1,110 to 667.

Cocaine bust smashes two drug rings

Police smashed two drug trafficking syndicates following the arrest of two men and the seizure of 147 kilograms of cocaine yesterday.

The haul, which police said had a street value of around HK$153 million, was the largest drug seizure so far this year.
