Sound advice for acceptable living

There is no better way to appreciate the clamour that is Hong Kong than returning from a holiday.

Noise control law to cover more areas

The government yesterday gazetted a change to the Noise Control Ordinance extending construction noise limits to more areas of the city. It said 280,000 residents would benefit. The ordinance requires a permit to be obtained if construction work with powered mechanical equipment is to take place between 7pm and 7am or on holidays. The change comes into force on January 1.

Public housing noise complaints hit 2,400

An average of 6,000 complaints of nuisances caused by public housing tenants are received each year - and last year 2,400 were related to noise.

This was disclosed by the housing chief yesterday in response to a legislator's question.

Noise levels should be published, officials say

Property developers should publish buildings' ambient noise levels in promotional brochures for homebuyers, environmental officials have proposed.

Using words to make a noise

MANY of YOU may have noticed that words make noises. Some words actually do sound a bit like their meaning.

As a reasonably frequent visitor to Hong Kong, I would like to add a few words to the issue of the noise caused by TV broadcasts on buses.

The debate has now been going on for some time and an acceptable solution still seems to be far off.

SAR's noise levels are getting worse

Sunday is the one day when, by law, construction noise is not supposed to assault our ears.

However, it appears to me that the police have no interest in enforcing this law. They only act if someone decides to complain.

What can citizens do to protect themselves from this endless assault on their ears? The stress this creates is impossible to endure.

Unwanted noise

I agree with your correspondents who have complained about noisy TVs on buses.

Silencer plea

I live next to the Yuen Long Government Office and next to Tai Kiu Market.

Air handling units were recently installed on the roof of the government building and I and other residents living nearby have found that the units emit an unacceptably high level of noise.

Noise over legal limit

I WISH Ted Thomas would get his facts straight in his letter (Sunday Morning Post, April 16).

Firstly, most residential apartments in Broadwood Road were no doubt built well after the stadium.

Getting worse

IN 1992, I complained, in these columns, about the noise nuisance caused by CMB buses on Park Road, but received no response from the company.

Noisy flat

FOR the past 14 months, I have been plagued by the noise my upstairs neighbours make.

I don't know what precisely they are doing, but since around June, 1993, they have been creating a variety of noises that give me no peace.

They are either hammering, drilling or moving furniture around, and I hear children thumping on the floor.
