Low jobless rate eclipsed by dark outlook, cutbacks

Hong Kong's jobless rate remained at a decade low of 3.2 per cent last month, although there are growing fears of worsening unemployment in the near term as a less rosy economic outlook and increasing corporate cutbacks take their toll.

6pc average pay rise

The average worker is receiving a pay rise of only six per cent this year, one percentage point less than last year, according to the latest pay trend survey by the Institute of Human Resource Management. Those working in the hotels sector received the lowest rise - just four per cent. They were followed by retail workers, who gained 4.8 per cent.
