Fast rebound spurs increase in ad sales

Advertising agents are expecting at least single-digit sales growth this year, thanks to a faster than expected recovery from the Sars outbreak.

Advertising firm FCB Hong Kong said existing clients who suspended advertising during the outbreak had increased spending in the past two months.

MTV Networks Asia has named Richard Cunningham as vice-president of network development and Simon Godden as vice-president, advertising sales. Both positions are based in Singapore.

Carat Asia-Pacific has appointed former McCann-Erickson media head Deryk Tang general manager of its Hong Kong operation.

DMB&B lands big Australia contract

In a major advertising coup, DMB&B has snared the multi-million-dollar Australian Tourist Commission (ATC) account to promote the country worldwide in the run-up to the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

The account is worth more than $150 million in annual billings to the agency.

Memorable ad

A Netherlands commercial featuring an elephant with a long memory took top honours at the 43rd annual International Advertising Festival in Cannes, France.

The ad was created by the Amsterdam office of Ammirati Puris Lintas, owned by the Interpublic Group. In the spot, a boy at a circus parade offers a baby elephant a Nestle Rolo, only to snatch it away and eat it himself.

Agency bought

Interpublic, the largest worldwide advertising group, has acquired, for an undisclosed sum, DraftDirect, the largest independent global direct marketing agency.

DraftDirect is Interpublic's fourth global company whose holdings include the McCann-Erickson Worldwide advertising agency.

Microsoft has placed under review its business-to-business direct marketing account, with billings estimated at US$10 million. The account had been handled by the Anderson & Lembke unit of the Interpublic Group of Companies, which resigned that portion of the account.

China agency tops billings

THE latest report of the 1995 Advertising Agencies Ranking names McCann-Erickson China number one in its billings above all joint-venture and foreign-funded agencies in China.

The report, released by the state bureau of industrial and commercial administration, said the agency was the fifth largest, after all agencies had been included.

FCB in China

PUBLIC relations firm Foote, Cone and Belding (FCB) has entered the China market through the purchase of a majority ownership in Megacom Advertising Company.

The company, renamed FCB/Megacom, has offices in Beijing and Tianjin with media placements across the country representing such clients as Colgate-Palmolive, AT & T and Renault.
