Movie review: After Earth

Movie-goers have every reason to be cynical about After Earth. The film is conceived, produced and co-written by Will Smith, one of Hollywood’s overrated and unabashedly narcissistic leading men.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (DVD)

This remake - or 're-imagining' as the movie-makers put it - of the 1951 film of the same name, The Day the Earth Stood Still is likely to disappoint even die-hard sci-fi buffs - not to mention fans of a weary, dead-pan Keanu Reeves. Featuring hi-tech visual effects, Day has a loosely 're-imagined' plot and lacks the cohesion of the original.

One for Keanu lovers only

A remake of the 1951 film of the same name, The Day The Earth Stood Still is a great investment for Keanu Reeves fans, but true sci-fi fans are likely to run screaming out of the theatre.

While the update features hi-tec visual effects, it lacks the strong plot and climax of the original. In fact, there is very little to hold the audience's attention throughout.

Happyness is a one-man show

Unfortunately, The Pursuit of Happyness is bogged down by the ego of Will Smith, whose overwhelming performance overshadows everything else, until there is not a single shred of genuine emotion left in the movie.
