Best of Fleming's Bond - the top five 007 tales

Casino Royale (1953)

The first and arguably the best Bond of all. 007 saves the world by playing cards with SMERSH agent Le Chiffre. Bond is dismayed when he's assigned the beautiful, but distinctly female, Vesper Lynd as a partner. As romance rises, so does the likelihood for betrayal. Sharply plotted, strong characters and written with pitiless clarity.

Ask Mr Brain... all will be explained

Why do people get grumpy when they are tired? Does it require more energy to be cheerful?

Some people say when you are tired, communicating with others is an effort. Your grumpiness discourages others from trying to be sociable. Conversely, if you are cheerful, they are more likely to talk to you. So it can be said that cheerfulness takes more energy.

A night on the tiles in the capital of chic

What do a movie star, a tai-tai and a glamour-puss do when they meet up in Paris? Well, apart from shopping, they go out for a night on the tiles of course! Bond girl Michelle Yeoh, tai-tai Reina Chau and Chanel's external relations director Bonnie Gokson all met up in the City of Lights a few weeks ago for the Chanel haute couture show at the fashion house's premises in the Rue Cambon.

Unique Bond

Irecently watched the latest James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and I could not stop thinking how bad this once-classic series had become. As usual, the soundtrack was fantastic and the stunts were great, but really they were no more spectacular than the stunts that had thrilled me when I was a teenager, many years ago.

Licensed to thrill

IT would not be the end of the world if James Bond was killed off as a viable film franchise, but it would be sad. Timothy Dalton's two outings as 007 all but terminated Bond's licence to kill and it is a considerable surprise - and relief - to see Goldeneye, the 17th Bond film, rescue the 'sexist, misogynist dinosaur' from the movie scrapheap.

Shaken, but definitely not stirred, over misuse of a licence to thrill

NEVER SEND FLOWERS - the new James Bond adventure, by John Gardner (Hodder and Stoughton, $221).

DEAR JOHN, From: Mr James Bond 'Dun Spyin' Home for Retired Agents Somewhere in the South of France THIS afternoon I had a most unpleasant experience - your book Never Send Flowers - the new James Bond adventure.

Licence to live forever

HE SHOULD have been killed long ago. Not by the criminal organisations he fought, or by the 60 Morland Specials he smoked a day, but by a fickle public fed up with his chauvinism, offended by his snobbery and bored with his adventures.
