Japan's outgoing ambassador to China, Uichiro Niwa, helped improve economic ties between the two countries but his lack of political skills in handling the territorial dispute in the East China Sea cost him his job, mainland analysts said.

Japan picks Masato Kitera as ambassador to China

The Japanese government has picked as ambassador to China a career diplomat who nonetheless has little Chinese experience, to help ease escalating Sino-Japanese tensions.

Japanese broadcaster NHK and Kyodo news agency reported yesterday that Tokyo had picked Masato Kitera to replace its current ambassador Uichiro Niwa.

Japan's new China envoy collapses in Tokyo

The new Japanese ambassador to China was taken to hospital in in Tokyo yesterday, with media reporting he had collapsed unconscious.

Shinichi Nishimiya, who was officially appointed on Tuesday, collapsed on the street near his home in the Shibuya district of the Japanese capital. Kyodo News said the ambassador was unconscious.
