Art or ad? Artists decry public funds for LV show

A group of local artists yesterday gathered at the Hong Kong Museum of Art to protest against what they call a misuse of public funds and the venue's support of an exhibition that 'is more about advertising than art'.

A feast in store from legendary 'plate' painter

In the art world, Julian Schnabel (below) holds something akin to rock star status. A major figure in the New York scene - known as much for his neo-expressionist plate paintings in the 1980s as his later film career directing movies such as Basquiat, about his late friend and contemporary graffiti icon Jean-Michel Basquiat - Schnabel has inspired and infuriated critics.

Immortal imagery

Jean-Michel Basquiat, who lived and died more like a rock 'n' roll star than a painter, entered the New York art world in the early 1980s as a graffiti artist. He soon became part of controversial boom in the art market, when it seemed that artists with the right following could sell almost anything for thousands of dollars.

Dealer to play HK by chance

PARISIAN gallery owner Fabien Boulakia has brought 100 paintings to Art Asia, but admits he has no idea whether they are the right ones.

''It is very much an experiment, because we have little or no idea what sort of work the people in Asia really like,'' he said.
