Paris Fashion Week: variety is the spice

It was a busy day for fashion in the French capital. Starting at 9.30am with a show by Japanese designer Junya Watanabe and ending with Spanish luxury label Loewe's show at the Universite Paris Decartes almost 12 hours later, the runways stretched the full scale of high fashion. It felt like an exciting day to be part of the industry. All of the 6 shows I attended expressed something totally different and extreme about how they developed as brands.

Devil and the details

It's the eve of Jean Paul Gaultier's first fashion show on the mainland, and the view from his suite at the Park Hyatt in Beijing is of a smog-filled sky. But the haze does not appear to dull the Frenchman's effervescence.

Gaultier turned 60 on April 24, and his status as one of high fashion's most famous iconoclasts remains intact.

A touring retrospective, 'The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk' premiered at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts last year, has since travelled to the Dallas Museum of Art and is now showing at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.

An insider's guide to your favourite fashion brands

How it began:

Born in Arcueil, France, in 1952, Jean-Paul Gaultier spent much of his youth sketching imaginary fashion collections at his grandmother's house (often skipping school) and sending them to Paris couture houses.
