Danish carrier Maersk Line will add an extra vessel to its dedicated East Africa service fleet from June.

NOL Koi opens career on Gulf-Karachi Express

Neptune Orient Lines' vessel NOL Koi made her maiden voyage to Jebel Ali port in Dubai on June 17 on the Gulf-Karachi Express (GKX) service.

The 1,400-teu container vessel will call at Jebel Ali port on a fixed-day weekly schedule.

Dubai boxes up 10pc

DUBAI Ports Authority says it handled a record 2.07 million containers in 1995, up 10 per cent on the previous year's 1.88 million. It said 9,211 vessels called at Port Rashid and Jebel Ali Harbours last year.

Total tonnage handled in the year rose 12 per cent to 28 million, the authority said.

New P & O Kuwait link

BEGINNING this month, P & O Containers will serve Kuwait and Bandar Abbas on a weekly basis from Singapore, with a feeder service operated from Jebel Ali.

The capacity on the weekly service between Singapore, the Middle East and the south Asian ports of Jebel Ali, Dammam, Bahrain, Bombay and Colombo, will be increased by the use of two 1,750-teu vessels.

Dubai set to beat tonnage target

TONNAGE handled by Dubai's ports of Jebel Ali and Port Rashid in the first seven months of this year totalled 13.73 million tonnes, up 12 per cent on the same period last year, the Dubai Port Authority (DPA) says.

Container tonnage, which represented about 60 per cent of DPA's throughput, increased by 16 per cent between January and July.

World-class port facilities

THE port Rashid Terminal, which is almost in the heart of Dubai City, has 35 berths up to international standards to service its clients, says the Dubai Port Authority.

The authority, which also runs the Jebel Ali port, says both facilities were equipped with the most modern guidance systems as well as the latest pilot boats.

Jebel Ali offers full facilities

THE Jebel Ali port, the largest man-made port in the world, says it has no objections to ships having their bottoms cleaned or grit blasted and repainting while at its berths.

It claims to have facilities to meet the demands of all vessels, including ultra-large crude carriers.
