Stocks of local jewellers and department store operators rallied yesterday as investors scouted for market laggards in anticipation of greater consumer buying power on rising optimism that the mainland's economic recovery is firmly on track.

More than 50 tai-tais got festive gift inspiration and many loosened their purse strings at American jeweller David Yurman's charity luncheon in the Peak Suite of the Four Seasons hotel in Central.

The women arrived early for the lunch on Wednesday last week to check out a display of jewellery and receive a hand massage.

Jeweller cites tax charge in loss

Tse Sui Luen Jewellery (International), with more than 120 jewellery shops in Hong Kong, the mainland and Malaysia, reported a $47.97 million net loss for the year to March due to a provision for a tax dispute, lower consumer spending and higher rents.

For the previous year, the company had a profit of $35.81 million.
