Guangdong to extend railway to Hengqin

Guangdong is extending inter-city railway construction to Hengqin Island in Zhuhai city by 2016, which is expected to link to Macau in the future.

Trains on the current Guangzhou-Zhuhai railway have been running at about 150km/h since January last year.

Milk recalled after children fall ill

Nearly 6,900 cartons of a brand of high-calcium milk have been taken off the shelves in Guangdong after 120 children became ill after drinking it, Xinhua said yesterday.

The report said 75 pupils had been taken to hospital with food poisoning symptoms since Wednesday. All had been discharged.

New bridge planned for Xi River after collapse

A new bridge will be built over Guangdong's Xi River to relieve truck congestion between the heavily industrialised cities of Heshan and Foshan, Guangzhou Daily reports.

The bridge will be built 6km upstream from the township of Jiujiang, where a bridge collapsed in June after being hit by a sand barge, killing nine people.

Nine still missing after collapse of Foshan bridge

Rescue work continued yesterday as at least nine people and four vehicles were confirmed as still missing following Friday's collapse of a bridge in Foshan , Guangdong province, officials said.

A sand barge on the West River, or Xijiang, struck a Jiujiang Bridge support pillar at 5.15am on Friday, Foshan vice-mayor Deng Weigen said.

Search for bodies after river bridge plunge

The search was continuing last night for people in six vehicles believed to have plunged into Guangdong's West River, or Xijiang, after a sand barge struck a support of the Jiujiang Bridge early yesterday.

'We are using sonar to search for people and the vehicles that might be missing in the accident,' Nanhai district spokesman Mai Shaoqiang said.
