Giving children the freedom of self-expression

After-school classes offer kids the opportunity to get creative

Many children in the west grow up with the 'art for art's sake' attitude that nurtures and promotes creativity. They are used to splashing paint on paper, having free artistic reign and getting their hands dirty.

The alarm goes off at 6am because we live in Clearwater Bay and the girls, who are 10 and 13, have to go to school in Aberdeen. It's quite a trek every morning.

All-round learning not confined to desk work

I was disappointed to read the letter 'Fridays 'no value for money' ' (Education Post, December 15) in which a parent complained that his/her son was not sitting at his desk for three consecutive Fridays, which was therefore a waste of the parent's money. Instead, the child participated in a school walkathon, there were parent-teacher interviews and an in-service day for teaching staff.
