Johnnie to Kei-Fung

A good week for ...

The veteran filmmaker was one of a clutch of Hong Kong winners at the Golden Horse awards, picking up best director at the event dubbed as "the Oscars of the Chinese film world". The star of To's film Life Without Principle, Sean Lau Ching-wan, won best actor. So many awards went to Hong Kong and mainland films that some Taiwanese lawmakers called for the event to be scrapped.

It was Johnnie To Kei-fung's 57th birthday last Sunday, and Italy's Udine Far East Film Festival seemed a fitting place for him to celebrate it. With the help of the Brussels arm of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, the festival threw a joint bash for To - and Hong Kong cinema - at the Ambassador Palace Hotel.

Collapsed tree poised to smash houses

A 20-metre rubber tree that collapsed after heavy rain yesterday was poised last night to destroy three houses in Tso Wo Hang, Sai Kung, one owned by director Johnnie To Kei-fung, if further bad weather caused it to slip from the retaining wall it was perched on.

Triangle's surrealism fits just right

Strange bedfellows they may seem, but Hong Kong cinema and surrealism found themselves curiously entwined yesterday evening with the international premiere of Triangle, a collaboration by veteran filmmakers Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam Ling-tung and Johnnie To Kei-fung.

And what better place for the film to be unfurled than in France, the birthplace of the surrealist movement?
