I am afraid that the Journey to the West series on TVB Pearl (referred to in letters by Winnie Ho, of TVB and Norman Barry, South China Morning Post, April 23, and April 29 respectively), does not compare very favourably with a previous version I have seen of this classic

Dreadful production

If Winnie Ho (South China Morning Post, April 23) believes that the audience for TVB Pearl's Journey to the West comprises more than ethnic Chinese viewers and a miniscule number of gweilos with appalling judgment she is sadly deluded.

It may be based on classic literature, but the TV production is a classic example of a good story badly told.

Welcoming new series

I am overjoyed to learn that TVB Pearl will this evening start to air 30 episodes of the series Journey to the West, as I have had a life-long interest in all aspects of Chinese culture.

I congratulate the station on taking this initiative.

There will be a handful of non-Chinese Pearl viewers who will be automatically put off from watching Journey to the West (Pearl, 8.30pm) precisely because it looks like what it is: a transfer from Pearl's sister channel Jade.

Chinese epic fun for Christmas

THE City Contemporary Dance Company will present a new Journey to the West this Christmas and New Year. This time, we will see the almighty Monkey King locked in combat with the cunning Red Baby King who is waiting to attack the holy contingent.
