I refer to the letter from Kenneth Howe ('Officials unwilling to compromise over seats and eateries at city's beaches', December 4) and would like to explain the rationale behind the operating conditions of the food kiosks at the gazetted beaches in Southern district.

I was at the airport recently and noticed a kiosk sponsored by the Social Welfare Department selling handicrafts made by handicapped or needy people.

What a great idea, but what a pity that it is located in an obscure corner in the departures hall that receives very little foot traffic.
