Commission cuts hit flight agents

About 20 per cent of the city's ticketing agents will be forced to shut down if all airlines stop paying them commission, the Travel Industry Council said.

All quiet on the eastern front as diplomacy foils a counter-strike

Loose cannons are not very precise weapons, and all but useless when aimed at aircraft. They do, however, make a great deal of noise and are capable of shattering glass at corporate offices.

The ordnance launched on July 2 from this column in the direction of KLM and Northwest Airlines drew quite a bit of return fire - but not all of it was unfriendly.

Mainland airline in cargo pact with KLM

China Southern Airlines next month will join Dutch carrier KLM to offer freighter services between Shanghai and Amsterdam, the mainland carrier's second cargo destination in Europe.

The Guangzhou-based carrier will fly a 100-tonne capacity B747 freighter two times a week from October 15 between Shanghai's Pudong airport and Amsterdam-Schiphol in the Netherlands.

Flight delay

TWO tyres on a KLM Boeing 747-400 burst during landing but there were no reported injuries. A flight carrying 180 passengers to Amsterdam was delayed for more than three hours.

KLM gets clearance to land in Beijing

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will inaugurate services between Amsterdam and Beijing on June 26, after a five-year battle with the Chinese government over landing rights.

KLM's general manager for Hong Kong, China and Macau, Vincent Vogt, yesterday said the airline had agreed to change the name of the carrier for flights to Taiwan in return for the approval to service Beijing.

KLM to launch Madras cargo run

KLM Cargo, the Dutch airline's cargo division, will inaugurate a weekly air freight service between Amsterdam and Madras in southern India tomorrow.

The new service supplements the cargo capacity on KLM's seven Boeing 747 weekly round-trip services to Bombay, Calcutta and Delhi.
