A childhood spent in an orphanage is often painful to recall, but 13 young people are planning to celebrate their time at the Po Leung Kuk by drawing together other past residents and throwing a party - with a purpose.

Teachers wanted in scheme to help needy

A final push is under way to recruit teachers for a $1.4 million language training programme for some of Hong Kong's most disadvantaged children.

Charity Po Leung Kuk is setting up English and Putonghua language classes and storytelling sessions for 300 children in its care homes with support from the Foreign Correspondents' Club Charity Fund.

Kids' best friend

The Po Leung Kuk (roughly, Youth Protection Bureau) has been serving the Hong Kong community for 125 years. It was established with a firm commitment to care and protect the young and the innocent and has since expanded its scope of services as a voluntary organisation.

One-fifth of elderly depressed, survey finds

About one-fifth of elderly people in Hong Kong are prone to depression, with the economic downturn aggravating the problem, according to a survey.

The situation was highlighted in a study of 1,579 elderly people conducted over the past two months by the Po Leung Kuk charity group.

Associate degree offer

Po Leung Kuk Community College of Hong Kong will offer a full-time, two-year associate degree course from September. The college, now sharing premises with sister college Po Leung Kuk Vicwood K.T. Chong Sixth Form College in Tai Kok Tsui, will apply for land allocation from the Government to operate in different districts of Hong Kong, it said.

School praised at sports event

Athletes of Po Leung Kuk 1983 Board of Directors' College were praised for their sportsmanship and fair play at the school's athletic meet.

In her address during the prize presentation, Po Leung Kuk chairman Julita Lee encouraged the athletes to help promote sports in Hong Kong.
