Police arrest 138, seize HK$107,000 in raid on mahjong gambling dens

Police arrested 138 people in connection with illegal gambling and seized more than HK$100,000 in bets early yesterday in a crackdown on three mahjong parlours in Yuen Long.

Two men, 20 and 25, were seriously injured when they were attacked by a group of men after a mahjong game in a Tai Po restaurant in Tai Yuen Estate's shopping mall.

Ousted legislator will continue to 'stand up and be counted'

Outspoken legislator and Frontier co-founder Libby Wong Chien Chi-lien, 59, will soon be out of a job. She is one of 27 legislators not elected to the provisional legislature.

A former health and welfare secretary, she was forced out of the Government in 1994 because of her New Zealand passport. She lives in Discovery Bay with husband Edwin Wong Hon-wai.

City to hold first mahjong competition

A SMALL city in north Guangdong will hold the first mahjong contest in China next year.

Shaoquan, on the border between Guangdong and Hunan, will organise a five-day mahjong competition on New Year's Day. Prizes will include a flat, a motorcycle and a colour television set, it was reported yesterday.
