Club 27 welcomes it newest member

Amy Winehouse's untimely end will no doubt provoke widespread theories that the age of 27 is cursed if you're a hard-living music artist.

Elephant Shell Tokyo Police Club (CD)

Canadian rockers Tokyo Police Club should be arrested for producing what is arguably one of the year's most boring albums.

Their debut album Elephant Shell is a two-disc collection of 19 songs, each of which lasts about two minutes. The biggest problem is the band's tendency to use unnecessarily challenging language in their lyrics.

Two Faced - The Changing Face of Portraiture

Agnes b. Librairie Galerie

Ends April 28

How much can you read about a person from looking at their face or portrait? Is it a road map to their psyche and persona? Or can people disguise their real intentions, feelings and character by erecting a facade of facial muscles - in effect blocking others from knowing their true self?

Question of the week: What's your favourite musical act?

Joe Slater, 14

Kurt Cobain. His sound revolu-tionised the music industry. The change from metal to grunge was sensational, and awoke the young generation to rebellion. The pounding rhythms of Nirvana's songs created a doorway for teens to express themselves, and gave that generation a voice they could relate to.

Don't be caught dead in ...

Bernard Willhelm's Superbowl ensembles (above right). Ditto Sonia Rykiel's winter whites (below centre]. If you're man enough for this season's kilts, think Kurt Cobain, not Braveheart (as seen at Vivienne Westwood, below left). As for Etro's checks and Lord Of The Rings facial hair (right), just say no.

Nevermind

(DGC)

With the force of a nuclear explosion Nevermind shattered the airwaves, tearing the pretentious soft-pop music scene to shreds and leaving nothing in its path untouched. It screamed the frustration of a generation battered by yuppie values and spat disgust at the trendy, beautiful set.

Staying in

MusicUnplugged In New York. Nirvana (Geffen Records). The most disturbing thing about the MTV Unplugged series is that it exposes the basic failing of rock music: without all that volume and distortion there isn't an awful lot left. There aren't many pop musicians out there writing music that can stand the 'unplugged' treatment.

THE POWER OF INVENTION

THESE are bewildering times and I, for one, blame the media. A curious confession admittedly for someone in my line of work but a recent trip to Singapore and its aftermath really had me wondering.
