Wong Fei-hung: The Eight Bandits

The subject of more than 60 films from 1949 to 1961, martial artist and apothecary Wong Fei-hung returned to the screen in the late 1960s. With Cantonese cinema in decline, producers turned to Master Wong to stem ticket-buyers' exodus to the groundbreaking Mandarin kung fu pictures exemplified by Shaw Brothers directors King Hu and Chang Cheh.

Farmer recalls time of hard work and honest profit

A dusty old box contains some of 69-year-old Zhongshan farmer Huang Xinwen's happiest memories. It holds several hundred letters he received after mainland media reported in 1979 that his was the first post-1978 wanyuanhu, or household to earn at least 10,000 yuan a year.

Tribute to a villain

Classic films starring veteran actor Sek Kin will be shown at the Hong Kong Film Archive later this month.

Sek, affectionately known as 'Bad Guy Kin', specialised in villainous roles.

He has been one of the most recognisable faces of Hong Kong cinema over the past 50 years.

He has appeared in more than 300 films.

Six of the best artists

Six third-year students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU) had the chance to impress their colleagues with an exhibition of their work at New Asia College.

Their acrylic and lined joint works were displayed at the college's Hui Gallery.

Show marks 100 years of cinema

THE Urban Council will present a large-scale exhibition during the 19th Hong Kong International Film Festival to commemorate the Centenary of Cinema.

Organised by the Hong Kong Film Archive, the 'The Early Days of Hong Kong Cinema (1896-1950)' exhibition will be held from today to April 22 at the City Hall Low Block Exhibition Hall.

Single race enough to give Sam honours

THUNDERSTORM warnings forced officials to cancel all but one race in Sai Kung, handing Sam Wong Tak-sum victory in the third leg of the Mobil Hong Kong circuit yesterday at Sha Ha Beach.

Race officer Lee Lai-shan, the world, Asian and European women's champion, called off the morning race because of yesterday's severe rains.

Elderly sponsored fast

An appeal to the elderly in wealthy Hongkong to remember less prosperous times brought about 1,400 volunteers to an eight-hour sponsored fast in aid of the poor in Guizhou. Tsang Yim-fan (left), Kwan Tak-hing and Yip Kwai were among those at Southorn Stadium who helped raise $450,000 by saying 'No' to all food.
