In a last-ditch effort to defuse a potential political crisis over plans for three new towns near the border, the development minister suggested yesterday that some of the flats could be reserved for Hong Kong buyers.

For most of his life, Lee Siu-wah desired nothing more than the quiet life he enjoyed in Kwu Tung, in the northern reaches of the New Territories.

Little did he expect that he would one day be swept up in a battle to save his home village from being swept off the map in a major redevelopment project by the government.

They put up signs to the company's chairman Lee Shau-kee saying: 'Uncle Four, we little papayas, cucumbers and pumpkins are not yet born. Please give us a chance.'

Another said: 'Uncle Four, I want to rent a farm!'

Poultry meat seized at unlicensed factory

Around 470kg of chilled poultry meat was seized in a raid by Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers on an unlicensed food factory near Po Lau Road in Kwu Tung, Sheung Shui, early yesterday. A man was arrested. 'We will continue to take stringent enforcement action against unlicensed food businesses,' a department spokesman said.

Typhoon-damaged tree chopped down

A paperbark tree in Sheung Shui, listed on the register of old and valuable trees, was cut down yesterday because it had become unstable after being damaged by Typhoon Hagupit last month, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department said. Propping up the tree, in the Kwu Tung section of Castle Peak Road and Fanling Highway, was not an option, it said.
