The San Carlo Theatre of Naples is one of the world's oldest opera houses, and its production of Verdi's La Traviata was traditional in both its virtues and its flaws. Grand in scale and distinguished by some magnificent singing, it was over-long and had little of the realism that has revolutionised opera in recent decades.

This is a roller coaster opera that swings between hedonistic abandonment and doom.

Watch alarm ruined opera

A WEEK last Thursday night I attended the opera La Traviata, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre's Grand Theatre.

While I was enjoying the beautiful music of the opera the watch alarm of a person sitting behind me sounded announcing that it was 8pm and ruining the mood created by the music, at least for me.
