Open verdict in death of inmate badly beaten by guards

A jury in the Coroner's Court has ruled the death of a Taiwanese prisoner three years ago remained suspicious but was unable to say what exactly caused it.

The five-member jury reached a unanimous decision yesterday on the death of Chen Chu-nan, who died after being admitted to the Correctional Services Department's Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre in 2009.

Passenger dies after collapsing on bus

A 66-year-old man collapsed on the lower deck of an 8P KMB bus heading to the Star Ferry Pier in Tsim Sha Tsui early yesterday morning. He had head injuries and was rushed unconscious to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was certified dead.

Triad gang's message service at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre exposed

Lai Chi Kok reception centre

A police officer went undercover as a prisoner to help bust a triad gang that sent in members posing as visitors to deliver messages and goods to inmates at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

Officers believe messages to inmates awaiting trial may have concerned their upcoming court cases, with one senior police officer saying the activities could pose a risk to the judicial system.

Guards charged over death in custody

Three prison guards were arrested yesterday after the death of a Taiwanese detainee at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre. The 33-year-old man, accused of a HK$70,000 phone scam, was found injured and unconscious in an isolation cell in August 2009 and declared dead shortly after. The officers are due in court today charged with wounding.

Seven teenagers appear in court in connection with man?s death

Updated at 4.56pm: Seven male teenagers, arrested in connection with the death of a 22-year-old man earlier this week, on Thursday appeared in the Eastern Court.

The seven, aged 14 to 19, were jointly charged with one count of murder. They did not enter pleas and have been remanded in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

Fight lands inmates in solitary detention

Sixteen detainees in the overcrowded Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre were segregated last night after a fight left nine injured.

The eight Hong Kong inmates and eight Vietnamese, aged between 20 and 40, were placed in solitary confinement as police investigated the incident.
