Veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, has insisted throughout his career that there is no "hopeless situation", but he has not managed to find a magical solution to end Syria's civil war.

Syrian media lashed out yesterday at peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, accusing him of being a "pawn" of the West after he criticised a plan by President Bashar al-Assad to solve the 21-month conflict.

UN-Arab League envoy Brahimi "has taken off the mask of impartiality he has worn ever since he was appointed to take over from Kofi Annan", the pro-government Al-Watan said.

Brahimi touts plan for peace in Syria

CAIRO - International peace envoy for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, said yesterday he had a proposal to end the 21-month conflict there. The UN and Arab League envoy said: "I have discussed this plan with Russia and Syria … I think this proposal could be adopted by the international community." AFP

Five people were killed and 32 wounded in a car bomb attack in southern Damascus on Friday, Syrian state television said.

A security source told Agence France-Presse that the bombing had targeted residential buildings for police officers and their families and that children were playing in the area when the attack occured.
