Lamma Island

Lamma Island, the third largest island in Hong Kong with a land area of about 14 square km, is situated 3 km off the southwest coast of Hong Kong Island. It is home to a highly diverse population of about 6,000 people, many of them of Western origins. There are regular ferry services between Lamma and Hong Kong Island.

Sonic boon

MOST PEOPLE REGARD the relentless noise of Hong Kong as a nuisance. Not Cedric Maridet. For him, the constant clattering of city life is a source of, and medium for, his art - sounds we hear but never listen or pay any attention to.

Hippy days

STEP OFF THE Lamma Island ferry onto the pier at Yung Shue Wan, and within 500 metres you'll have walked past a taste of Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Japan, England, Turkey, Italy and Sichuan. Not to mention noodle bars, waffle stands, barbecue grills and home-made pickle sellers.

Lamma bar's clued-up efforts a real treasure

Ho, ho, ho and a bottle of rum - or at least a cola! There was no treasure to be had but lots of fun, at the annual Island Bar Treasure Hunt in Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island.

It's the seventh annual hunt the bar has organised and involved teams solving 78 clues around a two-hour route on Sunday afternoon. The purse was HK$17,500 for Operation Santa Claus.

If you're looking for an unusual escape from the steaming city, skip the beach and head to Lamma Island instead. About two minutes by speedboat off Sok Kwu Wan pier there floats a wooden museum-cum-amusement park called Fisherfolks Village.

Sails of the centuries

One of my favourite places in Hong Kong is Aberdeen harbour. Sit along the promenade by the basketball courts and you can watch the sampans, ferries and other craft buzz in and out. Some of the sampans carry vegetables and noodles to feed other seafarers and some ferry passengers.

Yes, I enjoy a stroll in the countryside during holidays. Its natural beauty can help me relax. But I think pollution is becoming worse and the government should strike a balance between development and environmental protection.

Conditions on democracy damn HK to stagnation

For all practical purposes, the Basic Law experts have said that Hong Kong is simply not going to have universal suffrage, at least for decades ('Red flags raised on universal suffrage', April 28).

Explosive legacy under our feet

When Penny's Bay was being reclaimed in 2002, a routine part of the engineering works was to remove unexploded bombs from the future Disneyland site. The ordnance was dredged up along with sand from the seabed of the East Lamma Channel.

The ammunition had been dumped there by the British military, cleaning up Hong Kong after the second world war.
