Discovery Bay residents are fighting to save their loss-making ferry service to Mui Wo.

Its operator wants the government to invite other bids to run the service before its licence comes up for renewal in August, saying low usage and soaring fuel costs mean it has lost HK$2 million since 2003.

We agree with those correspondents who have talked about overuse of mobile phones and the internet.

Internet addiction is a relatively new problem. To some extent, it can be classified as impulsive behaviour if the users are losing control of how, when and where to use it.

Taxi driver leaders oppose fares rise

Three taxi driver groups, representing 7,000 drivers, are opposing a proposed HK$2 rise in flag fall because it will only help taxi owners, but not commuters and drivers, they say.

They suggest that a 'fairer' fuel surcharge akin to the one applied to airlines be introduced for taxis.

I refer to the letter by Rachel Ko ('Respect hard work behind textbooks', May 11).

She misinterprets the word 'respect' as allowing publishers to avariciously raise their profits to a level at which most grass-roots families can ill-afford.
