Prices of rare earth metals, a group of minerals used by the electronics- and clean-energy industries, are expected to remain high in the next few years after a substantial correction in this year's second half.

Attempt to corner the rare earth market doomed to fail

Beijing is tightening its squeeze on the world's supply of rare earth elements. Yesterday China's customs department revealed that the country's rare earth exports fell to just 829 tonnes in October. That's just a quarter of average monthly exports over the first nine months of the year.

Supply cuts stabilise prices for rare earth

Rare earth prices have stopped sliding, after major mainland producers cut their supply since late last month, according to Baotou Steel Rare Earth Hi-tech.

'Prices for rare earth products have stabilised compared with May,' Zhang Rihui, the company secretary of the Shanghai-listed Inner Mongolian producer, said yesterday.

Onfem buys alloy producer

Onfem Holdings, through US subsidiary Magnequench International Inc (MQI), has acquired a neodymium alloy producer, Xinbao Investment, for $23 million. Onfem said the transaction on May 29 was a significant step forward for MQI, which planned to establish and expand its mainland manufacturing capabilities. Xinbao produces about 27,272 kilograms of alloy per month.
