Citic Pacific's second bid to halt fraud inquiry fails

Citic Pacific, the Beijing-backed steelmaker and property developer, yesterday lost a second bid to block a police fraud investigation into its failure to disclose a HK$15.5 billion loss immediately in 2008.

The Court of First Instance allowed police to access documents it seized from the Hong Kong-listed company in a raid in 2009.

Yung has been one of the most successful owners in Hong Kong since the mid 1990s, when his signature horse was Mr Vitality, the older half-brother to Danehill Express.

An article in the South China Morning Post of October 18 - based on an earlier story in the London Sunday Times - reported that Larry Yung Chi-kin, chairman of Citic Pacific, had donated $8.4 million to the Countryside Alliance, a British organisation which has organised protests against a proposed legal ban on fox hunting.
