Meat no more

A report by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research gives convincing evidence that red and processed meats increase bowel cancer risk, while fibre-rich foods protect against the disease.

Pasta sauce

Lucini Spicy Tuscan Tomato Sauce

720 grams for HK$90, City'super

I like my Arrabbiata really spicy. Although this all-natural, no-sugar-added sauce didn't quite live up to its 'very fiery' promise, it was full of fresh and tangy flavour from vine-ripened plum tomatoes.

Supply allies

There is a scene in No Reservations - the sappy Hollywood remake of Mostly Martha - where Chef Kate is seen braving the New York winter chill at dawn on her daily seafood run to the docks. The sea-battered fishermen practically climb over each other to present her with the freshest catch of the day in exchange for a kiss on the cheek.

Turkeys take a holiday

Turkey, sausages wrapped in bacon and various hams - for many of us, Christmas is a meat feast.

But Robert Spina, who co-owns new American-Italian restaurant Posto Pubblico, says it doesn't have to be that way - many vegetarians get by just fine on Christmas Day - and that having a vegetarian guest for lunch or dinner over the festive period need not be cause for panic.

Model's pampered pooch enjoys a gourmet feast

It's time to rethink the phrase 'it's a dog's life'. Yes, some pooches do have it tough, but most of the pampered pets I know spend their days sleeping, eating and doing their business.

Model Ana Rivera took spoiling her pup to the extreme last week by designing four gourmet recipes for her terrier Gucci (no really, that's her dog's name).

Lady Killer

Lady Killer

by Lisa Scottoline

HarperCollins, HK$208

With its references to drowning sorrows in tomato sauce, to sweetening it with sfogliatelle and to luring a date to dinner via a good Bolognese sauce, it is not difficult to mistake this lawyer-cum-detective novel for an Italian-American's food guide to dealing with all of life's problems.

England claims lasagne

Lasagne is as English as roast beef and has been part of the English culinary scene since at least 1390, according to the Daily Mirror, citing a cookbook compiled for Richard II.

Organisers of a medieval festival found the meat, cheese and pasta recipe called loseyns in the ancient cook book.

Mes Amis

There is a very fine line between relaxed dining and poor service and Mes Ami in Wan Chai walks that line.

Stage set for full-time fun

The closure of Columbia Classics in Wan Chai's Great Eagle Centre was a sad loss to arthouse movie buffs. But anyone who was sorry to see it make way for yet another office furniture store will be pleased to know the site has now been put to good use with the opening of an excellent Italian restaurant.
