Manet not classified indecent

I refer to an article written by Jane Moir headlined, 'Anger as painting causes brush with censors' (South China Morning Post, August 9).

Living in the past

Once again the censors seem determined to make Hong Kong the laughing stock of the world. Last year it was the Obscene Articles Tribunal that tried to ban the bronze sculpture New Man, for daring to show male genitalia, only to be ridiculed by the courts.

Anger as painting causes brush with censors

Laws which have resulted in a painting by the French artist Edouard Manet being classified as indecent are an outrage, art experts say.

Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe, or Lunch on the Grass (shown right), was to be part of a slide show and lecture at the Museum of Art so had to be sent to the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority.
