Leo Burnett takes honours

Ad agency Leo Burnett Greater China scooped six first-place awards at the Mobius Advertising Awards in Chicago. One McDonalds and two Reebok ads ran in Hong Kong, while two spots advertising the Marlboro-sponsored Chinese professional soccer league and another for a Leo Burnett and Proctor & Gamble creative workshop were carried on the mainland.

SmarTone has appointed the Leo Burnett agency to handle its advertising campaigns and strategies. The account has a 1998 budget of about $100 million and was previously held by BBDO Hong Kong.

Leo Burnett breakthrough

Leo Burnett has reached its mandate to have representation in the top 10 Asian markets after signing an affiliation agreement with Bangladeshi company Bitopi Advertising.

The Dhaka-based company will serve Burnett multinationals Procter & Gamble and Nestles under a non-equity plan.

ADVERTISING company Leo Burnett's China operation has won the account to represent Carlsberg Brewery on the mainland after a five-month review process.

Details of how much the account was worth and the length of the deal were not disclosed.

Agency roars

LEO Burnett cleaned up at the recent Media and Marketing regional awards ceremony, being named Agency of the Year and Most Creative Agency in Asia.

Leo Burnett Thailand won Advertiser of the Year and Asian Creative Ad of the Year, while the China office won China Ad Campaign of the Year for its Rejoice shampoo campaign.

MEDIA magazine has named Leo Burnett 'Agency of the Year'. Hong Kong staffer Andrew Christy earned the 'Suit of the Year' award for his commitment to the China market.

McDonald's makes big switch

LEO Burnett has won the important McDonald's advertising account for Hong Kong, taking the business from 20-year incumbents DDB Needham Worldwide.

The fast-food giant has also appointed Burnett to handle its formal advertising debut in the China market.

To date, the chain has not used major media advertising on the mainland.

Adventurers given Wild West chance

PHILIP Morris Asia has launched its Marlboro Adventure Team programme in Hong Kong through long-term ad agency Leo Burnett.

The competition will send eight winners on an intensive nine-day adventure holiday in the American Wild West.

Burnett wins back account

LANE Crawford has reappointed Leo Burnett Hong Kong to handle all its advertising after a one-year stint with Bates. Leo Burnett's new print and broadcast campaign is expected to break next month. Lane Crawford, which used Leo Burnett from 1981 to 1993, said it needed an advertising agency that reinforced its upmarket image as it aggressively expanded in Asia.

TV award for Burnett

LEO Burnett Hong Kong won a bronze award for its dramatic Marlboro commercial at the 36th International Television and Cinema Awards at the New York Festival.

The ad, for client Philip Morris, was filmed in northern China and directed by Zhang Yimou.

Moving on

MALCOLM Glenn, regional managing director for Leo Burnett in Asia, has announced he will retire in June 1994. A 33-year veteran in advertising, Glenn plans to settle permanently in the US. He will be available to the agency on a consultancy basis.

He joined Leo Burnett in 1989 and, under his stewardship, the agency's Asian network grew more than 30 per cent.

Planet Reebok

LEO Burnett's success in Asia and Latin America with the prestigious Reebok account has prompted the sports-goods manufacturing giant to name Burnett as its global ad agency. This has added the US and Europe to the existing contracts.

Creative job

LEO Burnett has appointed Thomas Schulze as regional creative director for the Philip Morris Asia account. In eight years with Burnett, Mr Schulze has worked primarily on the Marlboro account. He spent the last three years in Frankfurt and, five years prior to that, in Chicago as art director.
