Vietnam to manufacture drug for executing prisoners

Vietnam will begin producing its own chemical for executing prisoners after factories in the European Union stopped shipments because of objections there to the death penalty.

Mainland executions up 260pc, report says

At least 1,700 people were executed on the mainland last year, up 260 per cent from the year before, and more than 7,000 death sentences were handed down by the mainland courts, Amnesty International said yesterday in its annual human rights report.

Injection to become execution method

Beijing is preparing to adopt execution by injection, a top judicial official said.

Shen Deyong, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court, told Xinhua yesterday that the mainland would use lethal injections once an experiment on the new execution method was completed.

A related set of regulations was under review by the Supreme People's Court, Xinhua said.

Execution by lethal injection adopted as official alternative

Execution by lethal injection is to be officially introduced as an alternative to firing squads.

Four death-row convicts were executed by lethal injection in Kunming yesterday, Xinhua reported.

'The convicts died within 32 to 58 seconds and showed no pain,' the execution report of Kunming Intermediate People's Court in Yunnan said.

Execution of rapist to be held in public

A public execution by lethal injection will be carried out to implement the death sentence imposed by the Philippine Supreme Court on a house painter who raped his 10-year-old stepdaughter in 1994.

Justice Secretary Teofisto Guingona said yesterday the execution of Leo Echegaray would be carried out in public to serve as a deterrent.
