As if it's not bad enough that Hollywood Pets (Pearl, 8pm) is still running - we're on to the seventh show of what, at most, should have been a three-part series - now we have another animal-antics programme to watch straight afterwards in tonight's prime time.

Lethal in quantity

THERE is enough non-stop action in Lethal Weapon (Pearl, 9.30pm) to conveniently disguise the fact that there are no characters of any interest, no plot to speak of and not much of a script. This is what Variety magazine called ''style masquerading as content''.

IN ITS never-ending wish to turn useless material into gold, Hollywood has found the proverbial philosopher's stone - movies which take the plot and the characters from a blockbuster film and recast them in a parody.

A FANFARE greets Mel Gibson's entrance at the packed Tokyo press conference for his new film, Forever Young. Buried under bouquets, almost blinded by the pulsing of flashguns, Gibson finds it all a little hard to take seriously.

''Thank you, nice dress,'' he tells one of the flower girls clad in an exquisite kimono.
