Major property developers have branded the government's plans for laws regulating the sale of new flats as 'unfair'.

Developers welcome new sales rules

The Real Estate Developers Association has welcomed the introduction of rules that require developers to announce the expected date of completion of flat sales and to specify transactions that have collapsed.

This comes after the sales of 20 luxury flats at 39 Conduit Road trumpeted by the developer, Henderson Land, fell through.

When legislator Kwok Ka-ki bad-mouthed Hong Kong's property developers for being greedy, one of them threatened to sue him. But then he backed off. Stewart Leung Chi-kin of the Real Estate Developers' Association conceded he could not sue even if he wanted to because, as a lawmaker, Dr Kwok enjoyed legal freedom to speak his mind while in the Legislative Council.

Concern over genuine home-buyers

PROPERTY developers yesterday hailed the new anti-speculation measures as sensible and reasonable but feared genuine home-buyers might be hit.

There was some concern over the ban of the re-sale of unfinished flats, and the nine-month restriction on pre-sales before assignment.
