Syrian rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad need the protection of foreign-guarded no-fly zones and safe havens near the borders with Jordan and Turkey, a Syrian opposition leader said yesterday.

There was little Beijing could do after Israeli bombs killed a Chinese UN observer in southern Lebanon. Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said that 'the Middle East people's blood should stop flowing', but those were about as strong as his words got.

For China, the event echoed the American attack on the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia, during Nato bombing in 1999.

Syrian cartoonist touches a raw nerve

Ali Farzan has spent his adult life highlighting contentious political issues through his drawings.

Now he himself has become one after two newspapers triggered a firestorm after publishing a series of cartoons highly critical of Saddam Hussein's regime drawn by the outspoken 52-year old back in 1991 along with two newer ones.

Analysts cautious on hotels as war looms

Hotel stocks would not seem like the ideal investment when the bullets start flying.

However, if the experience of the last Gulf War is any indication, the present Iraqi jitters may present a buying opportunity.

The headlines from early 1991 certainly do not tell that story.
