Toyota Motor recalls 22,869 Lexus cars in China as law broadens liability

The company recalled the imported Lexus IS cars, which were made from January 2006 to September 2011, according to a statement on the website of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

US auto sales hit fastest pace since January 2008

US auto sales posted their fastest clip since January 2008 amid an improving economic outlook and demand for replacement vehicles following the devastating Hurricane Sandy.

Total industry sales in November were up 15 per cent from a year earlier and came in at an adjusted, annualized rate of 15.5 million vehicles, according to Autodata.

There are some terrific luxury cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which closes on September 27. Here are our drools of the week. The Audi R8 convertible (right) has a V10 FSI petrol engine that hits 100km/h in 4.1 seconds and tops at 310km/h. Its roof closes in 19 seconds.

Level best

The Macquarie Pass reminds me a bit of the Tai Tam Road. The 8km stretch, about an hour's drive south of Sydney, cuts through lush rainforest and has terrific views of valleys and ridges.

What drives it? A thumping 4,969cc, 32-valve, V8 (D-4S VVT-iE) engine with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The engine's said to gallop to 423bhp at 6,600rpm.

How fast is it? Quick. Maximum torque's said to be 505Nm/5,200rpm, enough to hit 100km/h in about 4.8 seconds and top out at 270km/h.

Storm signal

THE HONG KONG Observatory has just raised the No3 signal for the first typhoon of the year. So, kudos for the representative from Lexus dealer Crown Motors, who braved the storm to deliver its new IS 250 to my doorstep.

The saloon is a lean, muscular looker, with a new nose and shoulders drawn back over the rear axle on fat, 17-inch Bridgestone tyres.
