Huge blast at quarry in Guangdong kills at least nine

A massive explosion at a quarry site in Guangdong yesterday killed at least nine people and shook buildings several kilometres away.

At least one person was still missing from blast, which occurred around 2.30pm in Wangbu township, Yingde , Xinhua reported.

Beijing raises death toll to 77 after long silence

Beijing authorities last night more than doubled the official death toll from last weekend's devastating storm in the capital to 77, following days of mounting public calls for a more accurate count of those killed.

The belated update was the first since Sunday, when it was said 37 had been killed.

Job creation is top priority for the nation, says Wen

Premier Wen Jiabao has warned that the mainland faces a stark employment outlook and stressed that job creation is a top priority for the central government.

'The country's employment situation will grow more complex and severe,' Wen (pictured) told a State Council meeting in Beijing yesterday, according to a statement posted on the central government's website.

Man stabbed to death in latest attack on foreigner

A man of foreign nationality was stabbed to death yesterday in Beijing amid a rising tide of anti-foreigner sentiment.

The attack occurred at the entrance of Qudeng alleyway in Xicheng district, south of Tiananmen Square, at around 3pm.

Police officers near the scene arrested the unidentified suspect, security officials said.
