Just what she needs

Tall visitors would have to crouch to access Elizabeth Waldmann's closet, because it sits beneath the staircase of the apartment above hers.

Shorts

Shorts are as much a certainty in spring and summer as death and taxes are in life. But that's not to say that you can simply recycle last spring's shorts for this season. Fashion wouldn't be a business if designers and labels didn't ignite a desire to run to the nearest store to buy 'the new shorts' - even if you already have piles of similar looking items in your closet.

Champion of the style mash-up

Anyone would assume that a person who makes a living designing shoes would have a killer shoe closet. Floor-to-ceiling shelves of shoes, some sort of temple to the god of footwear. One would also expect to see plenty of his own handiwork, or at least a few prototypes, scattered about. But that is not the case with Swedish designer Alexis Holm.

The strategically hip

With more than 400 hotels and locations in just about every major city, the Marriott chain is hardly renowned for taking a boutique approach to accommodation. But the recent revamp of its Renaissance brand is part of its strategy to break into this growing sector.

Soho hipster

While there is a growing revival for the classic way of dressing, there is also a trend towards a more casual, less put together look. The wearer looks like he doesn't give a damn about fashion when, in fact, he's put a lot of thought into it. It's part dishevelled, part artsy and very much downtown.

Prints

Wild, exuberant prints are poised to be one of the big trends of the coming season. While we are still firmly in the grip of winter, it doesn't hurt to start thinking about what to wear once the mercury begins to shoot up again.

Bold, brash and beloved

I am tacky and I embrace it. I like to dress in a ghetto fabulous way. My personal style is loud and fun

It's hard to miss Shana Rasnavad. She's the one with the wild shock of curly hair, the oversized hoop earrings, the colourful ensembles and the perilously high platform Chuck Taylors.

Leopard print

Leopard print often gets a bad rap when it comes to menswear. Many consider it too gaudy and risqu? and others associate it with dirty old men who prey on young model types. But in the past couple of seasons, more men have warmed to the idea.

Plaid

Plaid lends itself to a broad range of styles: there are Irish and Scottish tartans and the Catholic school uniform. At its most fashionable, plaid was the banner of the grunge trend. Remember those checked flannel shirts, denim shorts and Dr Martens? The Kurt Cobain, Stone Temple Pilots, Johnny Depp, Kate Moss years: these were the proponents of the plaid/grunge movement.

Double-breasted

The double-breasted jacket has been crawling its way back for several seasons and autumn 2011 has made it a must-have for men.

It fell out of favour with the rise of minimalism and the skinny silhouette. Now we have moved into a more classic, traditional style, the double-breasted jacket is the outfit for a man who is the sum of style, authority and elegance.

Sentimental journey

Many of the pieces in Bridget King's closet have stories to tell. There is that floral velvet column gown with a black lace overlay and a scooped back, which her friend Dan Rentillo made for her.

Animal prints

Take a walk on the wild side as animal prints, a perennial autumn favourite, reappear this season. Some designers are experimenting with animal motifs, such as panther (at Givenchy) and snakeskin prints (at Chloe). The tried-and-tested favourite, however, remains the leopard print, as spotted on the runway of Dolce & Gabbana.

Earthy tones

Can you wear a monotone brown ensemble and not look dull? Is there a way to wear earthy colours and still cut a dashing figure? The answer to both questions is a resounding 'yes'.

Turtleneck

It's a little early in the season to think about bundling up in knits. But fashion would be doing itself a disservice if it didn't make you consider merchandise that you currently have no use for. So you may want to start looking into one of autumn's most important pieces: the turtleneck sweater.
