Jewellery Star looks a gem

A STEP up in distance and the likelihood of softer ground in the present weather conditions could tip the balance in favour of Irish galloper Jewellery Star at Happy Valley tonight. Jewellery Star has a crack at the Cricket Club Valley Stakes, the fourth event on the programme, and the 1,650 metres looks just right for the galloper who shines at the city track.

Marcus and Cruz call shots at the Valley

THE big guns fired at Happy Valley last night with short-priced doubles from triple champion jockey Basil Marcus and local riding hero Tony Cruz.

Marcus scored on David Oughton's highly-promising stayer, Starbuck, in the second event and the progressive Privilege for his retaining trainer Ivan Allan in the sixth.

It will pay to put trust in Fownes' newcomers

LAWRIE Fownes was the trainer to note when it came to stable changes last season and he could just be your man again.

Trust Myself, Plenty Cash, Super Bingo II, Speedy Kid and Enthusiasm are examples of horses joining Fownes and winning on their first or second start for the former champion trainer of Calcutta.

Griffins offer future promise

TWO good quality griffin events to start last night's Happy Valley programme threw up a number of horses to follow for the campaign ahead. Both the winners, Aqua Princess and especially Lifo, appear to have a good future in front of them but so, too, do a number that finished behind and did not show up anywhere near as much.
