A police report has been made about possible interference with lifts in the Legislative Council building that may have delayed lawmakers returning to the chamber for quorum calls.

Paul Chan Mo-po, on his official blog yesterday, wrote that the lift and escalator safety advisory committee would be represented by the lift trade and "outside-sector parties" such as property management firms, property owners and consumers.

High time to be more considerate

Some people insist on trying to squeeze on board a full compartment while the train doors are closing.

When I moved to Hong Kong I could not help but wonder how people found time to line up for so long waiting for a meal outside a restaurant or a discount offer at a big brand shop.

Lifts are indispensable to a city such as ours, crowded with high-rise buildings. When we step into a lift - whether in an office tower, a residential block, or shopping mall - we move up and down within seconds, usually without any safety problems. The accident in which a lift carrying seven people plunged down an old building in North Point on Saturday reminds us that we should not take this convenience for granted. An 82-year-old man is still in a critical condition.

The lift that plummeted to the ground on Saturday night had been maintained by Shineford Engineering and government engineers are scrambling to conduct safety checks on 248 other lifts the firm serviced. So far they have found rust on three other lifts to the extent that services had to be suspended.

The accident happened at about 8pm in a commercial building at 480 King's Road. The lift dropped suddenly just after it had passed the first floor on the way up.

Lift crushes worker to death

A worker was crushed to death by a lift he was repairing in a commercial building in Causeway Bay. The 21-year-old man, surnamed Wong, was working at the bottom of the lift shaft in the building in Hysan Avenue. A Labour Department spokesman said he was crushed when the lift suddenly switched on and descended.

Lift robber hurts maid

A robber hiding in the roof of a lift switched off the elevator, jumped down and punched a maid before escaping with about $1,000, a mobile phone, a gold necklace and a bracelet in Western yesterday.

The 30-year-old domestic helper was trapped inside the lift when it stopped on the third floor of the building in Belcher's Street.
