Police to probe Legco building 'lift pranks' during quorum call

A police report has been made about possible interference with lifts in the Legislative Council building that may have delayed lawmakers returning to the chamber for quorum calls.

Taken for granted, lift safety needs attention

Lifts are indispensable to a city such as ours, crowded with high-rise buildings. When we step into a lift - whether in an office tower, a residential block, or shopping mall - we move up and down within seconds, usually without any safety problems. The accident in which a lift carrying seven people plunged down an old building in North Point on Saturday reminds us that we should not take this convenience for granted. An 82-year-old man is still in a critical condition.

Rust found on lift cables that snapped in North Point, injuring seven

The lift that plummeted to the ground on Saturday night had been maintained by Shineford Engineering and government engineers are scrambling to conduct safety checks on 248 other lifts the firm serviced. So far they have found rust on three other lifts to the extent that services had to be suspended.

The accident happened at about 8pm in a commercial building at 480 King's Road. The lift dropped suddenly just after it had passed the first floor on the way up.

Call for workers to be registered

A lawmaker and unionists have called for a registration scheme for lift workers in the light of the fact that about 1,000 of the city's 4,000 lift workers are not qualified.
