I was naturally dismayed to read your reports about an attack on a child in Lantau by a Siberian husky, and I have the utmost sympathy for the child's family.

New committee set up to look into lift safety

Paul Chan Mo-po, on his official blog yesterday, wrote that the lift and escalator safety advisory committee would be represented by the lift trade and "outside-sector parties" such as property management firms, property owners and consumers.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has pledged to step up its inspections of lifts maintained by contractors on the bottom rung of its performance rating system. The assurance comes after a lift in a North Point commercial building plummeted to the ground when its four cables snapped on Saturday night.
