Light touch

The Leaf light is a shining example of how environmentally friendly designs can look good. Developed by Herman Miller in conjunction with Yves Behar, the product is light and energy efficient: the lamp's LED apparently has a lifespan of 60,000 hours and uses 40 per cent less power than does a typical 13-watt compact fluorescent bulb. It's also cool to the touch.

Out and about

The outdoors never looked so good, with help from master of illumination Foscarini. The Havana (below right), which earned Greek designer Jozeph Forakis a spot in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, was originally intended only for indoors but new versions (suspension $6,300, below; recessed floor lamp $8,200) are now available to brighten gardens and paths.

Circuit training

Capacitance. It's not an everyday word but that is what touch lamps use to make and break mechanical connections. According to website home.howstuffworks.com, 'capacitance is the capacity an object has to hold electrons' and every touch lamp has a certain capacitance. 'This means if a circuit tried to charge the lamp with electrons, it would take a certain number to 'fill it'.

Bank recalls gift lamp over short-circuit fears

A table lamp given for free to new Standard Chartered Bank credit-card customers has been recalled because of a plug defect that could cause a short circuit.

About 12,000 were given out to successful credit-card applicants between September last year and June.
