In a further sign that China's first aircraft carrier could become operational this year, the still unnamed vessel's hull number - 16 - has been revealed, suggesting that testing is basically complete after 10 sea trials, mainland media reported.

Late admiral praised for navy's advances

The People's Liberation Army Daily paid tribute yesterday to the late Admiral Liu Huaqing, praising him for his contributions to the navy's modernisation, especially the aircraft carrier programme.

As the former chief commander of the navy, Liu was a strong advocate of the carrier programme.

PLA to get 13.5pc budget increase

THE People's Liberation Army (PLA) will get a 13.5 per cent increase in its budget, despite a record deficit in national funds of 23.75 billion yuan (HK$31.99 billion) last year.
