Man of Many parts

Liu Ye can still recall the day 10 years ago when his father returned home with a pirated DVD he'd bought on the street. It was a copy of Stanley Kwan Kam-pang's Lan Yu, in which Liu played the leading role. His performance attracted critical acclaim and led him to a best actor title at Taiwan's prestigious Golden Horse awards.

Artists set records at Sotheby's spring sale

A Sotheby's spring sale of contemporary Asian art raked in a little more than HK$144.88 million yesterday, while its Southeast Asian paintings fetched almost HK$69.3 million. World records were set by Liu Ye, whose work Bright Road fetched HK$19.14 million, and Lee Man-fong, whose Bali Life sold for HK$25.3 million. Many prices exceeded estimates by up to six times.
