The galaxy far far away

Over Christmas, the Herschel infrared space telescope took pictures of the Andromeda Galaxy. They were the best pictures ever taken this way. Andromeda is the nearest spiral galaxy to our Milky Way. It can be seen by the naked eye.

Show it again

I am writing to ask if TVB would consider broadcasting once again a documentary called Alien Encounter.

The documentary, first shown on Pearl, on November 21, 1998, tells how astronomers make use of radio telescopes to try and receive radio signals from extraterrestrial civilisations elsewhere in our galaxy.

Action speaks loudest

Champion sprinter Quick Action reverts to handicap company in a quest for New Year's Day silverware following a decent showing for Hong Kong in the Group Two International Bowl last month.

Quick Action finished just over seven lengths behind Group One winner Catalan Opening in the 1,400-metre Bowl and that is form in the purple.

Astronomers see through a glass darkly

IN the 1970s, stargazer Ng Hung-cheung could stand in Happy Valley and stare up at the Milky Way. Today he must trek to Yuen Long or Cheung Chau to find respite from the pollution.

'The starry sky in Hong Kong 25 years ago was even more beautiful than the Space Theatre at the Space Museum,' Mr Ng recalled yesterday.

Jupiter show starts in southeast sky

Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, will be directly opposite the sun on July 4. Astronomers call this planetary alignment an opposition, a term used when the Earth comes between any of the outer planets, Mars to Pluto, and the sun.
